THE JEEP

The Jeep is a general purpose, four-wheel drive, 1/4 ton vehicle used for transportation of passengers and light cargo.  The military abbreviated "General Purpose" to GP, and the pronunciation sounded like "Jeep."  Thus, the word Jeep was born.  It has been said that Jeeps were the backbone of military field operations and a greatly contributed to winning wars.   Although the military has replaced Jeeps, it does not lessen its importance.  Because Jeeps were so popular with GI's when they came into use, they adopted the word to represent anything or anyone new.

The Jeep carried by the Jeep Chief should NEVER be construed to mean that you are a Chief in training.  You are a fully qualified CMSgt and have earned your fellow Chief's respect, and accepted the responsibility of the highest enlisted rank is the USAF.  The Jeep is an outward sign that you are the newest Chief on base, and is the Chief's Group way of recognizing your accomplishment.

Upon presentation of the Jeep, you are to comply with the rules.

  The Jeep Rules
1
Participation in the jeep tradition is solely at the discretion of the newly selected chief.

2
The jeep will be presented at a regularly scheduled Chief's Group meeting, or by a group of chiefs at a time and place determined by the Chief's Group president and the Jeep Chief.

3
The Jeep Chief will maintain custody of the jeep during their first month in grade, and then immediately return it to the Chief's Group. In the rare instance when there are more selects for a given month than there are jeeps available, the time will be divided evenly as determined by the Chief's Group president.

4
The Jeep Chief is responsible for the condition of the jeep. The jeep is to be kept neat, clean and serviceable.

5
The Jeep Chief will display pride in ownership of the jeep, and have a small plate with the chief's name affixed to the back side of the jeep plaque. For standardization, this is to be done at the base engraving shop at the chief's expense

6
The jeep shall accompany the Jeep Chief each work day, and to all official functions such as awards luncheons, ALS graduations, Chief's Group meetings, etc. that the Jeep Chief attends.

7
The jeep shall be displayed in a place of honor and in plain view in the Jeep Chief's work area.

The jeep is not to be an object to be stolen. It is all Chief's responsibility to ensure it stays with the Jeep Chief. During the Jeep Chief's first month in grade, they will accomplish the following tasks:
  1. Meet with three chiefs from functional areas outside your own. One of the Chiefs must be a Command Chief.
  2. Participate in one or more of the following: ALS panel, FTAC panel, Rising Six meeting, etc. Make an explanation of the jeep part of the visit.
  3. Go to the dining hall and have lunch with a group of Airman, NCOs or SNCOs, or any combination thereof.
